Relations between Türkiye and Papua New Guinea

Diplomatic relations between Türkiye -Papua New Guinea (PNG) were established on 30 May 1979.

Turkish Embassy in Canberra is accredited to PNG. PNG has an Honorary Consulate in Istanbul. In accordance with the decision (2017/9861) of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Türkiye, Türkiye has officialy informed PNG about her plan to open a resident Embassy in Port Moresby and approval has been requested from the authorities of PNG.

No bilateral high-level visit between Türkiye and PNG has been conducted so far.

However, former PNGn Foreign Minister Hon. Samuel Abal attended the Türkiye -Pacific Islands Ministers of Foreign Affairs Meeting held on 9-11 April 2008 in Istanbul; and PNG High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Winnie Kiap attended the World Humanitarian Summit which was held in Istanbul on 23-24 May 2016. The then Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, the Hon Rimbink Pato paid a special visit to Türkiye on 07-08 October 2017 on his way back from Malta to PNG.

Minister for Internal Security of PNG, the Hon. Peter Tsiamalili signed the condolence book at the Turkish Embassy in Canberra for the victims of the earthquakes that took place in Türkiye on 6 February 2023.

In 2023, Turkish exports to PNG amounted to 4.29 million USD while imports from PNG were valued at 623.6 thousand USD. Turkish exports to PNG were mostly grains, food, cosmetics/hygiene goods and oils. Turkish imports from PNG were mostly coffee, tea, spices and fruits.

In 2016, Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) donated 100,000 USD to the Immanuel Lutheran Rural District Hospital in PNG for medical supplies procurement.

In November 2007, Turkish Government donated 50,000 USD to PNG in response to the floods that took place in the country.

PNG Government donated 300,000 Kina (92,400 USD) in response to the earthquake that took place in Türkiye in 1999.
