Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu paid a visit to Brussels on 14 December 2015 to participate in the EU-Turkey Accession Conference during which Chapter 17 “Economic and Monetary Policy” was opened to negotiations.
In the context of his Brussels visit, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu attended the working luncheon organized within the scope of EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting with the participation of EU Foreign Ministers, upon the invitation of the EU High Representative of the EU on Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. In the said luncheon views were exchanged on issues such as security, migration, regional developments, ways to improve the situation in Libya and the future course of negotiations for finding a political solution in Syria.
Following the 11th Intergovernmental Conference which opened the Chapter 17 into negotiations a joint press conference was organized with the participation of Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Şimşek, Minister for European Affairs and Chief Negotiator Volkan Bozkır, Luxembourg's Foreign And European Affairs Minister and Minister of Immigration and Asylum Jean Asselborn and the EU Commissioner on European Neşghbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn. Speaking at the joint press conference, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu pointed out to the existing close and positive relations between Turkey and the EU and said the momentum gained recently in the relations could serve the whole region. Underlining the need to place the negotiation process back to its natural course, Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu expressed Turkey's expectation of not having to wait for another two years for a new chapter to be opened in accession negotiations.
During his visit to Brussels Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu also attended the working dinner hosted by the Foreign Minister of the Netherlands Bert Koenders, the next holder of the EU Presidency.
