Turkey, being among the founding members of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is composed of 191 members, was re-elected to the Membership of the Council of the Organization, after a period of 66 years, in the elections held on 4 October, 2016.
The Council of ICAO, composed of 36 members, functions as the executive board of the Organization. In this respect, it foresees the formation and implementation of aviation law. Additionally, it is responsible for ensuring the orderly conduct of civil aviation worldwide as well as determining the standards to be applied in aviation by taking technical, economic, environmental impacts into consideration.
Turkey has achieved significant development in civil aviation especially in recent years and has increased its air traffic fivefold since 2003. Turkish registered carriers fly to 261 points in 112 countries. Turkey is among the top 10 countries in global civil aviation. The new Istanbul Airport, projected to be the largest in the world, will enter into service in the near future and will constitute yet another milestone in this regard.
All these noteworthy developments have significantly contributed to Turkey’s success at the ICAO Council elections.
