Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Gabon were established in 1960
following the independence of Gabon. Bilateral relations gained momentum
particularly after 2008, the year when Türkiye was declared as strategic
partner by the African Union. The Turkish Embassy in Libreville was opened
in January 2012 and the Gabonese Embassy in Ankara has been active since
December 2015.
In recent years, considerable progress has been registered in all areas
pertaining to bilateral relations between the two countries. Many high
level visits have been held since the then Turkish President Gül’s visit to
Gabon in 2011. President Erdoğan visited Gabon in January 2013 in his
capacity as Prime Minister and the President of Gabon Bongo Ondimba visited
Türkiye in July 2012 and May 2015.
The overall progress in bilateral relations between the two countries has
contributed to the intensification of economic relations as well. Trade
volume amounted to approximately 38,9 million US Dollars in 2018.
Turkish Maarif Fondation has a school in Gabon
Since 1992, Türkiye has provided scholarships to students from Gabon within
the scope of "Türkiye Schorlarships" program.
