Foreign Minister Davutoğlu pays a visit to Tunisia

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu paid an official visit to Tunisia on February 11, 2014.

At the meetings between delegations chaired by Foreign Minister Davutoğlu and Foreign Minister of Tunisia, Mongi Hamdi, bilateral relations developing in all areas were addressed and views were exchanged on regional and international issues of common interest such as recent developments in Syria as well as issues concerning Mediterranean basin and Northern Africa.

Touching upon the importance of Tunisia in the region and its success throughout the democratic process at the meeting Foreign Minister Davutoğlu underlined that the economic, political and cultural relations between Turkey and Tunisia are impeccable and Turkey will always stand by Tunisia.

Pointing out that the cooperation between two countries in the fields of health, transportation, tourism and agriculture is of great importance Foreign Minister Davutoğlu stated that the trade volume between the two countries must be increased. Furthermore, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu suggested to establishing a program which foresees exchange of diplomats between the two Foreign Ministries.

Tunisian Foreign Minister Hamdi stressed that the visit of Foreign Minister Davutoğlu is the first visit at Ministerial level after the adoption of new constitution. Underlining that Turkey’s support to the democratic transition process of Tunisia is of importance Tunisian Foreign Minister stated that economic cooperation between the two countries should be further developed.

As part of his contacts in Tunisia, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu was also received by President of the Constituent Assembly of Tunisia, Mustapha Ben Jaafar, Prime Minister of Tunisia, Mehdi Jomaa and President of Tunisia, Moncef Marzouki.

Foreign Minister Davutoğlu, besides his official meetings, also met and exchanged views with Tunisian opinion leaders. In this vein, Foreign Minister Davutoğlu emphasized that the common sense, consensus culture and political maturity have ensured the adoption of the new constitution and the formation of the new government and these developments serve as a significant model for the region. He also stressed that it is essential that Tunisia accomplishes its political transition process and Turkey will continue to contribute to the conclusion of the democratization process in Tunisia with success and the development of the country.
