Interview by Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu published in Folha de Sao Paulo (Brazil) on 28 February 2012

“The international community cannot remain silent, just watching the murder of the population.”

The Brazilian Government reaffirmed to still believe in a diplomatic solution.

According to Chancellor Antonio Patriota, the nomination of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan as envoy to Syria makes reborn the hope for a peaceful outcome.

Patriota affirmed, in Istanbul, that there is no international consensus on a military intervention in Syria, like what happened in Libya.

Regarding another crisis which has been concerning the region, involving the Iranian nuclear program, Davutoglu criticized the threats made by Israel. “An Israeli attack against Iran will be a great disaster, and we are against it. We do not want another war in the region.”

According to Turkey, which last year minimized diplomatic relations with Israel, the Jewish State should disarm itself before criticizing other countries.

“Israel has nuclear weapons, it is not a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. They have no legitimacy in attacking another country.”

Davutoglu reckons that the uprising tensions could have been avoided, in case the effort of mediation by Brazil and Turkey in 2010 had proceeded.”
