Relations Between Türkiye and Mozambique

Bilateral relations between Türkiye and Mozambique have gained momentum following the opening of the Turkish Embassy in Maputo on 15 March 2011—an important milestone in strengthening ties between the two countries. Mozambique is currently accredited to Türkiye through its Embassy in Rome, and has officially announced its decision to open a resident embassy in Ankara.

The visit of H.E. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Mozambique on 23–24 January 2017 marked the first official presidential visit and constituted a turning point in bilateral relations.

Mozambique Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, H.E. Maria Manuela Dos Santos Lucas visited Türkiye on April 11-13 and participated at Antalya Diplomacy Forum.

The first round of bilateral political consultations between Foreign Ministries took place in April 2019 in Ankara, followed by the second round in April 2024 in Maputo.

Trade relations have continued to grow steadily. Bilateral trade volume increased from USD 115 million in 2016 to USD 154 million in 2024.

Türkiye’s main exports to Mozambique include electrical machinery and equipment, various types of machinery, fertilizers, convenience foods, textiles and ready-made garments, nitrates, iron-steel and aluminum products, cereal-based products, and sugar and its derivatives. Imports from Mozambique to Türkiye consist of mineral fuels, tobacco, oil seeds and fruits, salt, sulfur and cement, metal ores, and unwrought aluminum.

Turkish investments in Mozambique are valued at nearly USD 300 million. Turkish companies are mainly active in trade, construction, energy and cement sectors.

Turkish Airlines operates three weekly flights between Istanbul, Johannesburg, and Maputo.

The Maputo Office of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) was established in May 2017.

Under the Türkiye Scholarships Programme, 66 students from Mozambique have received scholarships since 1992. Of these, 43 have graduated and 23 are currently pursuing their studies.
