Our diplomatic relations with Lao PDR were established in 1958, but our relations remained limited due to the geographical distance between the two countries and the differences in our foreign policy priorities. Initially, Türkiye’s Embassy in Kuala Lumpur was accredited to Lao PDR, and afterwards Turkiye’s Embassy in Bangkok was accredited from 1975 to 2017. Turkish Embassy in Vientiane has started its activities as of December 27, 2017. Lao PDR has an Honorary Consulate in Ankara.
H.E. Thongloun Sisoulith President of the Lao PDR, while he was Minister of Foreign Affairs, paid an official visit to Türkiye on 6-7 April 2008. President Sisoulith attended the 4th UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries, held on 9-13 May 2011 in İstanbul. Finally, Ex-Minister Çavuşoğlu paid an official visit to Lao PDR on 7-8 November 2018. During this visit, the official opening of our Embassy in Vientiane wasrealised.
The Trade and Economic Cooperation Agreement was signed between Türkiye and Lao PDR in 2008, and the agreement entered into force in May 2013.
On 18 March 2014, a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the establishment of cooperation between our Ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lao PDR and, a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the cooperation between the diplomatic academies of two Ministries were signed.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lao PDR H.E. Saleumxay Kommasith paid an official visit to our country on February 4-5, 2024. During the visit, Kommasith held a bilateral meeting with Minister H.E. Hakan Fidan and was accepted by the Vice President, H.E. Cevdet Yılmaz. Following the meeting with our Minister, a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of two countries was signed.
H.E. Minister Fidan visited Vientiane on July 26-27, 2024 to attend the 6th Trilateral Meeting of the Türkiye-ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partnership on the margins of the ASEAN 57th Foreign Ministers' Meeting and held a bilateral meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lao PDR H.E. Saleumxay Kommasith.
In 2023 and 2024, TIKA implemented 15 projects in Laos in the fields of education, agriculture, health, capacity building and combating natural disasters.To date, four diplomats from Lao PDR have participated in the "International Young Diplomats Training Program" organized by the Diplomatic Academy of our Ministry.
Within the scope of "Türkiye Scholarships", a total of 10 Laotian students have benefited from our higher education scholarships since 1992.
Approximately 10 citizens reşide in Lao PDR.
