Türkiye recognized Moldova’s independence on 16 December, 1991, which was declared on 27 August, 1991. Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Moldova were established on 3 February 1992. The Friendship and Cooperation Agreement, which is considered as the legal basis of bilateral relations between Türkiye and Moldova, was signed during President Süleyman Demirel’s visit to Moldova, on 2-3 June 1994.

The relations between Türkiye and Moldova gained significant momentum lately. President Erdoğan paid a visit to Moldova on 17-18 October 2018, which included Gagauz Yeri as well. President’s visit was the first official bilateral presidential visit from Türkiye to Moldova after 19 years.

Moldovan President Igor Dodon visited Türkiye on 30th December 2019 in order to attend the first meeting of the Turkish-Moldovan High Level Strategic Cooperation Council.

According to the Protocol signed on October 17, 2018, Turkish and Moldovan citizens can visit each other’s countries with ID cards only. The Protocol regarding the passport-free travel entered into force on 19 February 2019.

Trade volume between Türkiye and Moldova in 2019 amounted 568 million US Dollars (322 million Dollars of Turkish exports, 246 million Dollars of imports from Moldova). Turkish investments in Moldova have totaled 300 million US Dollars. Turkish construction firms have undertaken 38 projects, worth 518 million US Dollars.

Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries entered into force on 1 November 2016.

Türkiye has an Embassy in Chisinau and process for opening a Consulate General in Komrat continues.

Moldova has an Embassy in Ankara, a Consulate-General in Istanbul and Honorary Consulates in Aydın (vacant), Belek, Bursa and Manisa.
