Due to geographical distance, the relations between the two countries
remained limited in the past. However, following Türkiye's outreach policy
towards the Latin America and Caribbean region, the relations began to
develop further.
The Turkish Embassy in San Jose (Costa Rica) is accredited to Nicaragua
while Nicaragua's Embassy in Berlin is accredited to Türkiye.
Nicaraguan former Foreign Minister H.E. Samuel Santos Lopez paid an
official visit to Türkiye on 11-13 September 2013, which was the first
ministerial visit from Nicaragua to Türkiye. H.E. Minister Santos also
participated in the inauguration ceremony of H.E. President Erdogan on 28
August 2014.
H.E. Minister Çavuşoğlu participated in the Türkiye-SICA First Foreign
Ministers Forum held in Guatemala in 2015 during which the "Trade and
Economic Cooperation Agreement" between Türkiye and Nicaragua was signed.
Nicaraguan Minister for International Relations and Politics H.E. Sidharta
Marin participated in the Türkiye-SICA Second Foreign Ministers Forum in
Istanbul on 20 April 2017 and had a meeting with H.E. Minister Çavuşoğlu.
Minister Sidharta Marin also represented Nicaragua at the inauguration
ceremony of H.E. President Erdoğan on 9 July 2018.
The visit of H.E. Denis Moncada Colindres, Foreign Minister of Nicaragua to
Türkiye on 23 July 2019 is the most recent official visit between the two
countries.
Bilateral trade volume stood at 11,6 million USD in 2019. (Türkiye’s
exports:11,1 million USD, Türkiye’s imports:0,5 million USD)
