Relations between Türkiye and the Philippines

Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and the Philippines were established on 13 June 1949 and the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of the bilateral diplomatic relations was celebrated in 2019. The Turkish Embassy in Manila was opened on 17 October 1990, and the Philippines Embassy in Ankara in 1991.

Türkiye and the Philippines relations have developed remarkably in a wide range of areas in recent years.

In order to improve the cooperation in the defense industry sector, the "Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Industry Cooperation (SSI-MoU) was signed on 18 December 2018 and the "Implementing Agreement" of the said Memorandum was signed on 11 February 2019 between the Presidency of Defense Industry of the Republic of Türkiye and the Department of Defense of the Philippines.

The first two batch of the six T129 ATAK Helicopters were delivered to the Philippine Air Force with the official turn-over ceremony on 6 April 2022 with the participation of the Secretary of National Defense of the Philippines Delfin Lorenzana and the President of the Turkish Defense Industries Prof. Dr. İsmail Demir.

Likewise, the second batch of the helicopters were delivered to the Philippine Air Force with the official turnover ceremony which took place on 9 December 2022 in Malacanang Presidential Palace, with the participation of President of the Republic of the Philippines H.E. Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. The last 2 helicopters are envisaged to be delivered in 2024.

On the other hand, "The Cooperation Agreement" between Anadolu Agency (AA) and the Philippine National News Agency was signed on 22 April 2019, in Manila.

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) Manila Office, opened in April 2015, is tasked to provide socio-economic development assistance in all over the Philippines.

Turkish Airlines conducts daily direct flights to Manila since March 2015 which enables closer people-to-people contacts between two nations. Turkish Airlines has also started flights from Manila to Cebu on 28 January 2022.

Türkiye is among the members of both International Contact Group (ICG) and Third Party Monitoring Team (TPMT), supporting the Peace Process between the Government of Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), and of the Peace Committee for South Philippines, established within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (PSCP-OIC) to support the peace process between the Government of Philippines and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). Furthermore, Türkiye is contributing to the Peace Process in South Philippines by assuming the Chairmanship of the Independent Decommissioning Body (IDB) since its establishment in 2014.

The number of Turkish citizens registered as residents in the Philippines is around 680 and around 3.790 Philippine nationals are residing in Türkiye.

Under Türkiye Scholarships, the Turkish Government has previously allocated 192 higher education scholarships to Philippine citizens. During the Academic Year of 2022-2023, Türkiye has provided 10 scholarships to Filipino students.
