Türkiye is the first country which recognized Turkmenistan on 27 October
1991 following the dissolution of the USSR and to open its Embassy in
Ashgabat on 29 February 1992. Türkiye also supports Turkmenistan’s permanent
neutral status.
Bound by a common history, language, religion and culture, the two
countries enjoy balanced special relations based on mutual respect,
cooperation and the principle of “One Nation, Two States”. The two
countries are cooperating in the fields of foreign policy, trade, economy,
culture and education.
In the last five years, the two Presidents have visited each other’s
countries five times all in 2014 and 2015. 11th President of Türkiye,
Abdullah Gül, made a visit to Turkmenistan on the occasion of the
Equestrian Festival in June 2014. President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly
Berdimuhamedow paid an official visit to Ankara and attended the 4th.
Summit meeting of the Turkic Council. Subsequently, President
Berdimuhamedow participated in the presidential inauguration ceremony of
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in August 2014.
President Erdoğan paid an official visit to Turkmenistan on 6-7 November
2014, in his first presidential visit in Central Asia. In 2015, President
Berdimuhamedow visited Türkiye to have official meetings and participate in
the VI. Turkmenistan Investment Forum on March 3-4; to attend the
Centennial Ceremonies of the Çanakkale Land Battles on April 24 and
finally, to pay an official visit on August 7. President Erdoğan attended
the international conference entitled "Policy of Neutrality: International
Cooperation for Peace, Security and Development", which was held in
Ashgabat on 12 December 2015 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of
Turkmenistan’s neutral status.
The two Presidents have lastly had a bilateral meeting during the 13th
Summit Meeting of Economic Cooperation Organisation held in Islamabad on 1
March 2017.
Turkmenistan has become the leading country in the Central Asia for Turkish
contracting companies. From the independence of Turkmenistan until today,
Turkish contracting companies have accomplished more than 1.400 projects
worth 50 billion USD. Textile is another field in which Turkish companies
are quite active in Turkmenistan.
