Serbia’s government is a parliamentary democracy in which the President,
who has extensive functions and authority especially in foreign policy, is
elected for 5 years. Serbian National Assembly is a unicameral legislature
consisting of 250 seats and parliamentary elections are held every 4 years.
President Aleksandar Vučić won the last presidental elections held on 3
April 2022 and he started his second term on 31 May 2022. The new cabinet,
whose program was presented by Prime Minister Ana Brnabić, took office on
26 October 2022.
Serbia’s primary strategic goal is EU membership. In this context, full
memberhsip negotiations with the EU started on 14 December 2015. The EU is
Serbia’s number one partner in the fields of investment and trade. The
political and economic reforms carried out within the scope of the EU
membership process constitute the driving force of the country’s social and
economic development. On 16 January 2022, a referandum on the
constituational amendment (containing some judicial reform articles within
the framework of harmonization efforts in the EU membership process) was
held.
Although interrupted from time to time, the meetings between the parties
within the scope of the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue Process, which was
initiated under the auspices of the EU for the normalization of relations
with Kosovo, continue.
