Relations between Türkiye and Solomon Islands

Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Solomon Islands were established on 8 March 1979. Turkish Embassy in Canberra is accredited to Solomon Islands.

No bilateral high-level visit between Türkiye and Solomon Islands has been conducted so far. On the other hand, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade of the Solomon Islands, John Oti, attended the UN Conference on Least Developed Countries which was held in Istanbul, on 9-11 July 2007.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade of the Solomon Islands, William Haomae, attended the Turkish-Pacific Foreign Ministers meeting which was held in Istanbul on 9-11 April 2008.

Former Deputy Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Manasseh Maelanga and Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade of the Solomon Islands Peter Shanel Agovaka attended the UN Conference on Least Developed Countries which was held in Istanbul, on 9-13 May 2011.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade of the Solomon Islands, Clay Frau Saolaoi, attended the Turkish-Pacific Foreign Ministers meeting held in Istanbul on 7-8 June 2014.

Dr Melchior Mataki, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology of Solomon Islands attended the World Humanitarian Summit held in Istanbul on 23-24 May 2016.

The economy of the Solomon Islands is largely based on agriculture, forestry (timber) and fisheries. Economy of the country shranked between 1998-2003 due to the ethnic conflicts experienced in those years. Agricultural sector is an important part of the income and export of the country. The economy is also heavily dependent on foreign aid which is mostly provided by New Zealand and Australia.

As majority of the population of the country live within 1.5 kilometer of the coastline, Solomon Islands is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change and global warming.
