Diplomatic relations between Türkiye and the Maldives were established in
1979. The Turkish Embassy in New Delhi is accredited to the Maldives and
the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations
Office in Geneva is accredited to Türkiye.
Türkiye and the Maldives are two friendly states in close cooperation at
several international platforms, the United Nations (UN) and the
Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in particular.
President Erdoğan’s visit to the Maldives during his term in office as
Prime Minister on 9 February 2005 in the aftermath of the earthquake and
the tsunami disaster in South East Asia on 26 December 2004 was the first
official visit from Türkiye to the Maldives since the establishment of
diplomatic relations. Foreign Minister of the Maldives H.E. Mr. Abdulla
Shahid’s visit to Türkiye on 15-21 April 2008 was the first official visit
from the Maldives to Türkiye.
The then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim,
paid an official visit to Türkiye on 28-29 August 2018. Later, Minister Asim
visited Türkiye on the occasion of Extraordinary Summit of the Organization
of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Jerusalem hosted by Türkiye on 18 May 2018,
and he represented the President of the Maldives at the Inaugural Ceremony
of H.E. President Erdoğan on 9 July 2018. Minister Asim also met with our
Minister of Foreign Affairs during the said visits.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Yavuz Selim Kıran represented H.E.
President Erdoğan at the Inaugural Ceremony of the President of the
Maldives H.E. Mohamed Solih on 17 November 2018.
Minister of Home Affairs of Maldives H.E. Imran Abdulla visited Türkiye
between 3-6 December 2019 to attend a programme organized by Türkiye Green
Cresent Association. Minister Abdulla also met with Minister of Interior of
Türkiye H.E. Süleyman Soylu and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E.
Yavuz Selim Kıran during his visit.
