Montenegro has turned its face to the West since gaining its independence
from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro as a result of the referendum
held in 2006. It also aimed to develop its parliamentary democratic system,
to be on good terms with its neighbors and to overcome existing problems
peacefully, to establish a free market economy and to integrate with the EU
and Euro-Atlantic institutions.
In line with this goal, Montenegro gained the status of a candidate country
to the EU in 2010, 4 years after gaining its independence and was included
in the NATO Membership Action Plan. Within the framework of these
objectives, Montenegro became a NATO member on 5 June 2017. In addition,
Montenegro, which made rapid progress in EU membership negotiations, opened
all chapters.
There is no ethnic group in majority in Montenegro, which is based on
citizenship. Ethnic and religious communities live together in harmony, the
state respects all ethnic, cultural and religious identities, and in this
context, Montenegro exhibits social peace at a level that can be described
as a unique example for the countries in the region.
