Relations between Türkiye and Portugal

Türkiye’s relations with Portugal date back to 1843. Diplomatic relations which ceased during World War I were reestablished on 28 May 1926 following Portugal’s declaration to become a party of the financial clauses of the Lausanne Agreement. Türkiye appointed an Ambassador to Portugal in 1931 and Portugal reciprocated in 1941.

Trans-Atlantic relations, NATO membership, Mediterranean identity and the fact that the two countries are located at opposite ends of Europe have positive implications for bilateral relations. Türkiye and Portugal enjoy friendly bilateral political relations. Portugal supports Türkiye’s EU membership process.
