Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the meeting held in Cyprus on 4th December 2001

We regard the meeting held today (4th December 2001), between the two leaders, upon the invitation of H.E. Mr. Denktaş, President of the Republic of Northern Cyprus, as a forward and positive step leading to a comprehensive settlement aiming a new partnership on the basis of equal status in Cyprus.

Turkey, from the outset, has supported this constructive initiative of President Denktaş. We hope the expected face to face meetings to start in mid-January in the Island, will also help to take concrete steps in order to establish the ground and provide the possibility to further this positive atmosphere and mutual understanding which prevailed today between the two leaders.
