Statement regarding the press statement of the President of the United Nations Security Council on Cyprus - 12 July 2002
We share the views and assessments reflected in the statement made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) regarding the press statement of the President of the United Nations Security Council on Cyprus, dated 9 July 2002.
During the ongoing direct talks process, which was initiated by President Denktaş, the Turkish Cypriot side has acted constructively and made substantive contributions in order to move the process forward. The Turkish Cypriot side is determined to maintain the same constructive attitude.
All aspects of the Cyprus question are to be handled as an integrated whole. A comprehensive and lasting settlement in the Island can only be reached freely through negotiations between the two parties. In this respect, statements attributing responsibility to one side cannot be construed as reflecting the facts pertaining to the process and partial assessments cannot assist in the efforts for a settlement.
We expect the third parties to treat the two sides equally, which indeed will constitute the most concrete and substantive contribution to the process.
