We were saddened to be informed of the killing of 10 personnel of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) in Haskanita, South Darfur, on 30 September 2007.
AMIS has been trying to bring an end to the ordeal of the People of Darfur since 2004 and deserves appreciation for the works it carries out under very difficult circumstances.
Turkey, who regularly contributes to international peace keeping operations around the world, including Africa, strongly condemns this brutal act which will not, in anyway, contribute to the cause of those who have perpetrated it. We hope that those responsible of this attack will promptly be brought before justice.
This sad event, once more, has shown the importance of urgently deploying a comprehensive international force in Darfur. Turkey, which presently operates also a field hospital in South Darfur will not be deterred of this attack and will continue its assistance to the people of the region.
We extend our condolences to the relatives of those who have lost their lives and to the African Union. We also wish a quick convalescence to those who were wounded and a safe return to those who are reported missing.
